Watercolor-Beginner and Intermediate with Julia Holmaas

Instructor: Julia Holmaas created her first oil paintings at age 10. After college, the National Park Service employed her until retirement as Chief of Interpretation at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 2004. She began painting watercolor in 1992 while working as an Exhibit Curator at the NPS Design Center in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. There she was responsible for planning numerous educational exhibits for Park Service Visitor Centers.
Painting in both watercolor and oil Holmaas has won numerous awards for her work. She is an active member in the Duneland Plein Air Painters, teaches Beginning Watercolor at the Art Barn School of Art and Watercolor Seminars for the Michigan City Art League.
Description: Each morning will consist of discussion and demonstration. We’ll have a one hour break for lunch then students will have ample opportunity to paint on their own with one-on-one guidance from the instructor. For questions call or email Julia at 219-879-6975 or jholmaas@gmail.com .

Covered Palette such as John Pike or Robert Wood with large paint wells and mixing area
Or a Butchers Tray, or a white plastic or china plate for mixing paint.
Brushes: Synthetic brushes are ok for beginning. When you are ready to get a good brush, look for Kolinsky sable.
1 ½ ” or 2 “ flat wash such as Robert Simmons sky flow.
1” or ½ “ flat with shaped handle for scraping and burnishing
# 10 or 12 round that comes to a good point
# 4 or 6 round
# 1 rigger (optional)
Paint: Professional Quality - Winsor & Newton(WN), Daniel Smith (DS), Holbin, Schmincke(Sch), Da Vinci (DV), Cheap Joe’s American Journey(AJ). Or Van Gogh student grade (this is the only student grade I think is worth using). I use and will demonstrate with a double primary, one warm and one cool of each primary color.

Paper: 100 % rag paper. 140 lb. Cold press, either Arches or Winsor and Newton. Watercolor block or individual sheets. I will demonstrate on ¼ sheets Arches
Painting board: 12” x 16” for ¼ sheet or 16”x 23” for ½ sheet. I use a masonite art board and ½” Gatorboard, available from Dick Blick or Cheap Joes. ( ½ “ Foamcore available at Hobby Lobby will work but will warp) .
Odds and ends:
Spray bottle
Water container – a large yogurt or a coolwhip or margarine container will work
# 2 drawing pencil, kneaded eraser
Water soluble felt tip marker , black. Marvy or Tombow
Sketch paper , Bristol drawing pad – smooth or plate surface
Paper towels, kitchen sponge
Large soft natural sponge (optional)
Masking tape
Stapler (one that will open to staple paper to board)
Reference photos – landscape, animals and flowers.
Watercolor easel (optional) if you prefer to stand rather than sit while you work.
